DVD 1600 as transport - Additonal comments

I haven't tried my DVD-1600 as a transport into a DAC but if I may make a broad generalization, I would think that even an average to mediocre transport into a decent DAC should improve it's audio quality significantly.

I am not saying that the DVD-1600 has a mediocre transport but even if it did, I would still expect noticeable gains in audio quality through most modestly priced outboard DACs. Keep in mind that the DVD-1600 has an Optical Digital Out only (no coaxial digital out). Make sure that the outboard DAC that you choose has an Optical Input.

The sound quality from the DVD-1600 is only OK in my opinion. I'm not saying this to belittle the DVD-1600 but to let you know that there are significant benefits in store for you even with a modest outboard DAC.
