You should try as many of differenct listening methods you can so you can see the different results you will get. If you never get a null result something is possibly wrong.I prefer to use quick switching with a passive switch box where I can either swap between two cables or switch the cable under test in series with my reference setup. This way my reference signal chain does not change, I'm only adding an removing one cable.
