There are lots of reasons. But mainly it is because they can. This is my system. I spent so much money that the dealer gave them to me. I am sure it didn't cost him nearly as much as the list price.
Krell KPS-20i CD player
Krell 300R Receiver
Krell KRC-HR preamplifier
Krell FPB-300 power amps
Genesis V speakers,
AudioTruth Dragon speaker cable
AudioTruth Diamond interconnectsMy thought is: If a person thinks a system sounds good enough to spend $35000 or so , then using $40 cables is an insult to their intelligence. I have played this system using $100 monster cables and I cannot tell the difference. But I use the "good" cables because I have them.
Remember today's audio is so good that almost any piece sounds good. And the improvement gained by spending more money decreases with each step up. I love my system, but I doubt that most people could tell any difference between it and one costing 2 or 3 thousand.
Anyone willing to spend this much money wants the absolute best. That includes the absolute best cables. As my wife reminds me, only an idiot would pay $9000 for a CD player. So I guess that same idiot would pay $12000 for speaker cables.
