Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

NO even if you know "how"...

I've built many DIY power cords and Cat5 wire is taboo. This is a matter of common sense. AC kills and Cat5 is more than dreadful to advocate for AC use. Even more robust and thickly insulated wire that's not AC rated should never be recommended for AC use in a public forum. I for one regret ever posting (in the past) about non-AC rated cable for DIY power cord use, and while those posts pointed at cable that's saner than Cat5 wire, any wire and/or cable that's not AC rated is reckless and purely irresponsible to recommend to others in a public forum. One should build such a dangerous power cord and use it at risk to *oneself* (and family) for a while before saying it's "OK". Cat5 is *not safe* for DIY power cord projects.
