While the Oyaide probably needs more time to break in (especially if it has been cryoed), your findings are not really that surprising to me. A couple of people here have found the Oyaide's (including the straight gold GX which is supposed to be the warmest) to be bass shy when they have replaced cyroed Hubbell 8300H's with the Oyaides. While they have appreciated the added information of the Oyaide, they have also felt the tonal balance was skewed as you've described. I have no experience with the Venom, but as a silver plated cryoed Hubbell (I would expect that it is either a straight plated 5362 or a plated 5362 modified in a very minor way), I would expect that it might offer up a bit more lively presentation than a straight cryo treated Hubbell 5362 but still retain most of the really full, smooth sound that that receptacle delivers. If you search the archives here, an inmate by the name of Paul A. or Paul H. I believe describes almost exactly what you have, and another inmate whom I know quite well has essentially said the same thing with me via e-mail. So the Oyaide may just not be a good match for your system and your ears.
If you want to really break the Oyaide (or your Venom for that matter) in, stick it on your refrigerator or a chest freezer for a month with 2 weeks on each half of the receptacle and then slot it back into your system. You will not have to second guess yourself at that time; if you don't like it, put your Venom back and be happy.
