I'd second this advice. I put off doing this to my Rotel 855 for quite awhile. I had already replaced the captive cord with a Bob Crump cord, but hardwired it. Like you, I couldn't find a suitable strain relief (and yes, I have some of the compression type).I finally bit the bullet and figured out the best placement (I had to avoid the voltage switch and plate over it which were right by the PC entry). It actually wound up being easier than putting the hardwired cord in to begin with! Just make yourself a template of the IEC, draw an outline (use masking tape if you wish) and start nibbling away. Its surprisingly easy. Once you get to a corner, work the nibbler around and go straight down the next line. A little touch up with a file, and you're done. I used an IEC with 2 mounting screws, but same principle for one that snaps in. Since it was a 2-wire device, I terminated the ground to the sheilding of the internal cable (still Belden 19364 from the Crump PC), and let it float otherwise. Much better than splicing in an in-line IEC.
Good luck!
