How does one go about finding out which iron sounds best without building enough amps to try them all and listen to each (in stereo of course) under optimal conditions for each OPT but in otherwise as much the same context as possible(?)
For example, build some amps using 300Bs all at the same operating point with different makers OPT all at much the same reflected anode load impedance etc. and switch OPTs in an A/B test using the same speakers, room, program, levels... Also swap the 300Bs around during the test.
No one else can do the listening for you.

Hi
"No one else can do the listening for you"
true, but I canīt built every topology, using all available OPTs in all available working points.
So, some advice from people satisfied with their designs and choise of parts is a good start.
However I understand your point. A good sound for ones ears is not necsessary the best for mine..
I am using a DRD-300B design today using Nickel cored (55%) parafeed OPTīs so that will be my refference.
I have tryed swaping tubes, optimizing working points and changing components, so I think I cant go any further with with this design, and whant to try something different.
I an not expecting "THE TRUE" just some sugestions.
Thanks
