Over the last 2 months, I have been (finally) ripping my SACD collection to hard drive with a vengeance. I figure I should stop buying new SACDs and just download the MC FLAC or DSF files directly. Options are limited unfortunately. I want to get that new Rach #3 on Chandos. Can only download in MC from Chandos directly, and it would be cheaper to purchase the SACD from Prestomusic and rip it myself. Seems worse for the environment though.
By the way, you can hold a lot of SACDs on one of those 4TB SSD's they sell now. Big space saving move.
Follow Ups:
Speaking of that John Wilson / Sinfonia of London Rachmaninoff Third Symphony album, I'm waiting until Chandos has some kind of sale before I order it myself. It's a bit frustrating, but I don't want to reward them for customer-hostile prices (although I've broken this rule on occasion - LOL!).
OTOH, since we live in the "post Liz Truss" era, the British pound (Chandos, as you know, is a British company) doesn't seem to be worth as much these days as it used to - so at least there's that! ;-)
Another consideration is that the 24/96 PCM download is the original format of the Chandos master, so there's no transcoding involved to convert the PCM to DSD for use on an SACD. So you're closer to the original with the download.
The pricing for MCh downloads on BIS's eClassical site is much more customer-friendly if you stick to BIS's new releases - they're heavily discounted for the first week or so after their availability is announced on the site. But of course you have to check the site frequently to make sure you don't miss out on the discounted price. One of their latest offerings (still available for a discounted price) is the Mozart Prussian String Quartets with the Chiaroscuro Quartet:
I won't be downloading this album myself, since these folks play in a HIP style (barf!), but there are enough interesting releases to make checking the site frequently worthwhile. eClassical also has a "Daily Deal" which features a different album from the BIS catalogue each day at a substantial discount. Some, but not all, of these "Daily Deal" albums are available in MCH too.
