Seems my grandfather has an old McIntosh MC2100, C28, and MR74 laying around the closet. I'm more interested in the amp and tuner. The preamp supposedly had some capacitor troubles due to the use of ceramics. Anyway, is it worth packing and shipping them and using them in some sort of system, or are they classic and good but not necessarily worth the hassle and expense? Thanks!

I own the MC2105 (MC2100 w/ meters), C28 and slightly newer MR77. McINtosh seems to be a love it or hate it company for some very strange reason which I won;t go into here. I've owned the tuner since new, the preamp was a demo pickup up just as production ceased and the 2105 I purchased about 2 years ago because my MC250 (has half the power) was just a tab underpowered my my newly acquired speakers. I've listened to a lot of other systems and components and yes there are better in terms of individual characteristics, specifications, etc. However, the set makes for a wonderful musical system that you can listen to for hours and hours without fatigue My cost of operation has been ) until recently when the 28 started experiencing a channel imbalance. Turns up 5 caps need replacement. 5 caps in something like 30 years; I wish I could get a car or a Microsoft product to be 10% as reliable I'm upgrading all of the inputs and outputs to gold plated connectors. The 2100 is rated at 105/channel and typically puts out about 150. Even with my inefficiaent speakers, you'll have plenty of reserve. These amps are conservatively rated and were built on a minimalist component theory and uses the autoformers which do an excellent job with complex loads and maintains the same power level regardless of load. Dampening factor is high enough that it should not be an issue with any peaker. The amp also can be set up as a dual amp, stereo or mono amp, though I am not really sure that it means much to most persons.
The 28 tone controls are switchs and therefore more usable than most tone controls. I have the SCR8 speaker switch allowing both speaker switching on the amp and power amp turnon without going through the on/off switch or using a power bar. I use it to switch on the 2105 that exceeds the power rating of the switch and use the speaker switching to switch in my Koss ESP9 electrostatic headphones. Also, it employs a separate power amp for the heardphones for those who enjoy dynamic headphones. Some things that make the unit versatile but also ultimateley detract from the sound are the various input level and output controls. A sonic improvement can be realized by taking this out of the circuits.
The 74 is based on the 1st generation stereo tuner design and is a good sounding tuner and equal to the broadcast quality of most if not all stations.
As to if it is worth the shipping costs, the answer is for Mc lovers yes, for Mc haters no.
Don't count out the C28! You can always have the caps replaced. Its a good preamp and it goes well with the other Mac equipment. You are a lucky guy!
The Blue Book says that your grandpa spent $600, $650 and $850 on those three pieces, and that today's USA average retail in primo shape is $426, $522, and $619. On e-Bay, it's likely even higher. If you don't want them, I'll pay the shipping! Enjoy your grandpa's generosity -- and Enjoy Your Music!
This equipment is worth quite a bit. Each piece is probably worth several hundred dollars. If you check eBay you can get some idea of their value. There is a large market for Mac equipment of this vintage. The value definitely exceeds the price of packing and shipping.
Consider yourself a lucky guy!
