Until you listen to one on a modern system, not a series II but an old silver faced DC300A, I would feel it best to not pass judgement. This includes a modern preamp, modern source (vinyl as well) and top flight conductors....and Modern Speakers.I have made the mistake of assumption before based on past experiences.
If you don't, then it is simply guessing. Fortunantly for me, I listened to one for 4 hours tonight with nary a complaint.
Follow Ups:
at 1K, limited class A and tiny supply do not inspire confidence in the ancient unit......Suggest liberal use of Q-tips if you think the Crown will keep up with good contemporary amps......My preamp is fairly modern, but my turntable is made largely of plastic and my wires are something I built myself....Speakers are plastic as well so guess I'll have to pass on a proper ABX test of the Crown....Some day when I can get some decent equipment maybe I'll do the ABX between the Crown DC300A and the cheap Parasound I use here.....You can see details of my modest system and some pix by clicking on the (M) after my moniker......

....The chart in the service manual is at 400 for dampning factor at 1K. 20 is the dampning factor at 20K.A dampning factor of 3 is usually suffceint.
8V in a microsecond seems pretty quick. The transformer weighs in at 28 lbs as well.
Specs look good, the sound compared with some 3000 to 6000 dollar modern amplifiers is on par. Very very close to my MC2500 McIntosh. Surprisingly close. The Adcom GFA 555 is a dog compared to it in tightness of bass and fluidity of the mids and extream highs. I have 3 examples of the GFA555..so it is not a "bad one"
That is why I asked...has anyone heard one lately?...and to John Curl, what do you think?
I agree, some vintages such as the series II had a shouty midrange and recessed top end.
Primarily, I posted this here as per how the topography of the design compares to some of the more modern equipment.
Ya just have to hear one of 'em again!

Actually, I cannot challenge your subjective input. It is possible that the Crown DC-300 works well in your system. Technically, the DC-300 has many problems.

Why waste my time with this? I am surrounded by power amps. Some of my own design, and many others. Sorry, I don't have a DC-300 around.

Since the amplifier is noted as a lab standard in its day, I simply thought you would be so kind to expound on it some. I am simply trying to get a feel for its topography. I apologize for offending you on a topic I once admired your advice on. Did not think it would be an imposistion. Perhaps I am wrong. I will refrain from addressing you in the future.
