Bought The Police, Every Breath... It's great!!
Why hasn't Sony produced a rock/pop disc that sounds like this?
Even the CD layer sounds better than many of the Sony SACDs.
This SACD is amazing!!!! Of my 80 or so SACDs, it's the one I'll play to show off my system.
All of a sudden, Cheap Thrills, Thriller, Byrds, Carol King, BS&T, Rolling Stones, Bangles, etc. seem like second class recordings.
Only the James Taylor recordings give The Police sonic competition.
To date, I've been very pleased with the Universal releases. Not to mention they tend to be hybrid and are cheaper than the Sony releases.

Follow Ups:
Chris, Couldn't Stand The Weather is excellent on SACD. Truly excellent. Also, I agree that U2 on SACD could be huge. If marketed properly, it could do wonders for SACD.

SRV Couldn't Stand The Weather is still a showcase recording. But your main contention is correct -- UMG is kicking Sony like a bad tin can. Now if UMG can do a U2 SACD catalog release, and the format is all set.

Thanks.

Some of the drum\bass interaction is fantastic. Makes one forget about SRV's playing.

The Alley sounds even more intense on this one.I wanted to get the Japanese pressing. Strange thing is, they never release it, even if it had been out for 2 years already in US.

I think you're right, when U2 comes to SACD (as it surely must sooner rather than later), it will give the format huge exposure such as will probably seal its future viability.

Yes, U2 would be significant. At least until we see something like The Beatles.

While I agree that it would be great to have U2 on board with SACD, I've always found the U2 recordings of poor sound quality on CD... Very harsh, lacking in dynamics, definately not what I'd consider hi-rez material unless the mixing did something horrible with the source tapes! All for MCH U2, but I doubt SACD is needed to represent the quality of the stereo source material unless it's VERY different from what I've heard so far. I love U2, but not for the recording quality...
I completely agree that some of the earlier CDs were not great, but the vinyl was, so I think the tapes are full of life. And it will work in digital OK. I have the MFSL CD of "The Joshua Tree" and it's miles better than the normal CD, and quite close to the LP.The most recent U2 seems pretty good on CD too.
I'm NOT interested in multi-channel; I hope I did not give that impression.
I think to release the whole U2 catalog on SACD would create an enormous amount of support and new addicts.

A mate of mine brought some U2 CDs to play on my system and they sounded like sh*t. His argument that U2 could afford the best just didn't wash given the results.

...is coming. This year.

It's awesome, after listening to the CD of this for several years, to have the masters DSD'd and hear what these songs really sound like. How 'bout that piano on King of Pain!!!!!
At least in the stores I frequent in my area whether it be rock, pop, jazz or classical titles. That may not be because of the sound quality per se however. Thanks for your viewpoint on the Police and Universal in comparison with the Sony titles regarding sound quality. I am enjoying what I have purchased up to this point with the Sony titles. I think many are in agreement that they better the CD of the same title.
The CD layer on the Police disc sounds better than than many Sony SACDs? I'd be interested in other's observations with this title.

I think the DSD layer sounds wonderful. The Redbook layer is a bit (not alot) but, a bit too compressed. I am listening to the DSD layer anyway so who cares...

than dual-layer multi-channel releases from Telarc, Chesky and others. But Universal does have the best price with CD or lower pricing.
![]()
Telarc cut their prices from $25 to $20. And what have Sony done? I think they put them up when they started pushing the m/c wheelbarrow, using that as a justification for the price increase.
