Hope someone can help. I have a Pioneer PDR-509 recorder that has done fine on digital copies but I'd also like to archive some old homemade cassettes. This recorder is hooked up to an NAD 314 with two tape loops. However, I'm getting the error message "can not rec" and the manual refers me to my hookups. The hookups appear correct, unless there's something new that this process requires of which I'm not aware. I'm going to try to bypass the amp and record the cassette straight into the CD-R but it would be nice to be able to hear it as it's playing. Can anyone suggest where the problem might be? Next step is to have a repairman look at it. Thanks a lot!

I am not familiar with your CDR (I own a PDR-W839), but are you using the analog inputs on the CDR and switching the CDR to analog source? I have never gotten around to archiving our cassette collection (which is why I picked up the CDR in the first place), but this is the way that mine hooks up.
agreed- Im not familiar with your cdr however it sounds like the cdr needs to be set to see the analog input signal(if it has one). also check that your record source ins and outs are connected correctly on all equip. and also the source path is correctly routed thru the preamp.
Thanks. You two just saved what's left of my hair. Good for me, bad for the Rogaine company! :)Many thanks! I seem to have missed the part in the manual about the recorder passing an analog signal. Hell, I thought those things just somehow knew! :)
.
analog is converted to digital by the a/d converter within the cdr recorder, just as the digitial is converted (d/a) back to analog for playback
I wasn't clear on whether his unit was a cd recorder or a just a copier.
