“Pardon my ignorance but what does resolute mean in the following?
'The Soro SE had more powerful lows, however not as resolute as the Kit1/Preamp Kit lows.' Does this have to do with conviction of the presentation of the lows?”Please excuse my butchered English.
What I should have said is "not as resolving", meaning more distintion between the bass notes and more presence of low level detail. I'm reluctant to say that the Kit1/Preamp Kit bass is tighter for fear of implying the Soro's bass is bloated, which I don't think is the case, it's rather that the Kit1/Preamp Kit has less power but more detail in the lows.
“I am surprised to hear the Soro SE was more laid back in your system, my set up can get edgy in the highs and I have always thought the Soro was very neutral and blamed the souces, but the other information is very hopeful for me.”
And your statement is just as surprising to me! The Soro SE was on loan for 5 days and I made a big effort to get to know it in that limited time. I used it with a variety of sources and cables (but always with the AN-J's) and never found the highs to be edgy in the least, and in fact just the opposite, if anything rolled off on the top end.
The Soro SE came from a dealer and had some old stock tubes installed, which were quite likely very expensive (knowing the dealer), and I didn't try rolling the tubes out of respect for his generosity.
Have you tried different tubes in your Soro and if so you find?
I've rolled tubes in various amps I've owned and find that different tubes can have a huge effect on the sound. Some 12AX7's can be particularly annoying. I did a quick search in the Tube Asylum for "Soro tubes" and came up with the post linked at the bottom. A search of all the asylums may turn up a lot.I'm very interested in pursuing this subject.

interesting thread about the tubes FrankI do wonder how the tubes sound and have not tried to roll them. I bought all new tubes from Andy at Vintage Tube services and asked for the best he had. The 6L6 are RCA and have a black metal case which I had not heard of but he said they were superb. Maybe they just test good and Andy is not an audiophile I do not know.
I may look into tubes for the Soro but am reluctant to invest more into it at least for now.
FWIW when I was driving my JM Reynaud Trentes I had no problem in the high end but I thought they were rolled off a little bit (in a very euphonic way)
Phil, your comment is interesting:"FWIW when I was driving my JM Reynaud Trentes I had no problem in the high end but I thought they were rolled off a little bit (in a very euphonic way)"
That is exactly how I'd describe the highs on my AN-Js through the Soro SE!
It's surprising that your AN-E speakers would be harsh with the Soro whereas the Trentes weren't. I wonder . . . could it be a problem with your AN-E Kit?
If you have an Audio Note dealer in your area it may be worth trying your Soro SE on their factory built AN-E's, perhaps the /D or /Spe to get a better idea where to look for the problem.
Another idea may be to contact Bob Neill, who is an AN dealer. I've seen his posts in the Speaker Asylum and I'm pretty sure he is both an Audio Note and JM Reynaud speaker enthusiast. Maybe he can shed some light on your experience of driving both speakers from the Soro. He may notice and respond if you ping him at the Speaker Asylum and reword your post appropriately.
My suspicion is it would be good to get the AN-E's working smoothly with the Soro first, and I believe they should, because they have as smooth but detailed high frequencies as any speaker I've heard.
As things stand right now, the Kit1/Preamp combo would give you more articulate bass and smooth detailed mids, but would also give a boost in energy at the top end, which might translate to more harsh than what you have now.You might also want to follow up with Brian at AudioNoteKits to get his take on the situation.
Of course this is only one person's opinion and I could be wrong here. If so I apologize for stepping on anyone's toes. Bob & Brian have WAY more experience with AN gear than I'll ever have!
I'd sure like to know how it works out. I just can't imagine the Soro SE that I borrowed contributing to HF harshness with any fine speaker.
There are no dealers in my area. I sometimes wonder if it is the quality of the electricity in my house. Even though I have dedicated circuits some days are better than others. I always thought it was the speakers fell into the 'accurate' category not euphonic and sometimes revealed problem upstream. I will keep you updated Frank, if and when I figure this out.BTW, I hate to bother Bob Neill, I have dealt with him before and he is a very informed dealer of JMR and AN but I hate to occupy anyones time when I am not shopping from them. Also Brian, who is super nice, readily admits he does not have a ton of experience with the speakers. Maybe Peter Q would be the guy.
