I have a bottlehead ForplayIII and consider to buld a Audionote Kit1 .
I think Kaaos and Zeke has the same combination.1.Is it a suitable match?
2. Should I use Kit1 as is with volume at max? (may overfload input valve??)
3. How can I bypass the Kit1 input stage (first tube)? Can I go direcly to the SRPP stage? how?
Best regards
Balle

Hi Balle ,There are severall posts about that problem (Pre or not , first stage or not) on that forum. It's a matter of trying.
The volume pot is between 1 stage (6SN7) and driver stage (5687).
Setting the volume to max will not overload input stage , but you will
certainly have noise...
You can easely by-pass first stage by just connecting signal inputs
directly on pot input and remove 6SN7.
If you use a pre-amp you can replace pot by equivalent resistors
(find out best position, remove and measure resistance values of pot)
Hi Balle,I use to have Kit 1 and in my system and to my ears it sounded better with pre-amp (Foreplay II). There was just much more of everything and it sounded much more musical than without pre-amp. Maybe it was a synergy with speakers I had at that time (Audio Note AN-E) or CD player but the difference was big. Anyhow the position on the amplifier pot was always at half (12.00 hours) and I would attenuate the volume on Foreplay.
I also tried some other pre-amps at that time and Foreplay sounded better than most.Unfortunately I don't know the answer about bypassing input stage.
I have heard that it is unwise to remove or bypass the pre stage of the kit1 (things may have changed without me knowing it since though). That leaves 2 options:
1. Run the kit 1 with near max volume set.
2. Forget the Foreplay and simply wire in a selector switc and some silver wires.I'd go for option 2 as this is now a standard option for the kit1. It also has the advantage of removing extra circuitry - which is one of the things that SET is about IMHO.

Hello Balle(1) I built the Foreplay 2, but never tried it with the kit1. I tried a couple other preamps with the kit1, but imo the kit 1 sounds better without a preamp.
(2) I tried the volume pot(s) in different positions, but still preferred the kit1 w/o a preamp...... YMMV
(3) I have read you can wire the kit1 w/o the pre stage, but you would have to check with Brian at AN kits as to how it is done .
