Thanks for the enquiry into the DAC1.1 upgrades. We are looking at interstage transformers , output transformers and tube power supply upgrades along with component upgrades. The digital board will stay the same for the time being . I expect to have the I/V transformer available in the October time frame and the output transformer upgrade by the end of the year. The tube power supply should also be ready in November (hoping). I would like to post some unofficial upgrades on the web site this fall - thanks for your enquiry. Send us an email at the kits website if you would like any more info

Is it possible to upgrade my DAC 3.1x with interstage trans and tube power supply

Exciting news, Brian!
Have a Dac 1.1 with 1.2 power supply, but wasn't comfortable doing some of the mods, on my own, that John PA, and others have done.
Will be watching and waiting!

that is what I did when I started doing this. Yes I have blown chips (they all get sockets now), caps and a few other things but with caution there are fine rewards.ja in clear, breezy and warm, Tucson, AZ

Hi John:
Yeah,I agree, but after being satisfied with a few tantalum, Blackgate changes, and adding the 1.2 PS with the 6dj8 tube,AN copper in oil 3.3 uf coupling caps., I got complacent with the sound and was leary of screwing up the i/o tranformer wiring, as well as the output trannies wiring. I have done enough DIY now, that I should be over my phobia of screwing up and not being able to fix it! LOL
I remember your early attempts and subsequent excursions into the Mods on your 1.1, IMPRESSIVE!
I have been concentrating on upgrading the rest of the system. ie: Paramours with Iron upgrade, and Supravox Signature Bicones In JE labs style Open Baffle.
I suppose I should register myself and list my system, so any future comments I may make might, have some credibility.

the sound did not change much but the supply will last a long time before needing to recharge. I have always bypassed the sealed lead acid as they sound best this way (a 10 to 15uF high quality cap). So today I thought I would go one step further and use my Theta caps that are 12uF in place of the Solen bypassed caps I have been using. The Theta were in my crossover for the speakers but I changed the value of the crossover so these were not in use (the reason for $50.00 caps laying around). The change in sound was dramatic for the good. I beleive in the very best power possible as this is part of the musical signal but I thought I had the supply to a good point as I could hear the improvement over the regular supply. This made another very nice change.ja in partly cloudy, warm and humid, Tucson, AZ

I would encourage other owners of AN DAC kits to take
the plunge into DIY, don't be afraid to take the next step. I
have attempted several mods, that I scratched my head about,
but with the resources available on the web, and other ASYLUM
members posts, I was able to implament new mods without any
serious disasters. Read "John PA" discription of the mods
he made to his DAC, in the "Inmate Systems" sections and you
will be on the right track. Post questions - some one will answer.I purchesed a DAC 1.2 several years ago, and modified my DAC
to mirror Asylum member, "John PA" Audio Note 1.1 DAC, and the
sound is excellent. I have only been able to compair my DAC 1.2
to a Mark Levenson # 39. In a heads up A/B compairson, the modified
AN 1.2 sounded better in all areas compaired to the # 39. Better bass, wider sound stage, and a seperior "stearophonic effect" the illusion of live music. I'm not saying it's "live music" just IMO sounds better had a more natural sound. The transformation from
the stock AN 1.2 DAC to the highly modified unit has been quite the
learning experence, and the improvement in sound quality has been
amazing, I did not think such improvements were possible! It is!
