I'm trying it again...
In an effort to simplify my system I am evaluatiing the Dussun V8i in the home. Ping Gong (AAA Audio) is a knowledgeable and gracious man, and shipped the unit to me without payment up front! I of course mailed him a check the same day I placed the order, but that kind of intermittent trust is what makes me feel good about spending my hard earned cash with folks like him....Bravo Ping.Anyway, it just arrived today, and just like the Korsun branded unit, its very sexxy, built like a brick poop shack and has oodles of power and dynamics out of the box...this thing grabs the electrostats and woofers on my SL-3's like nobody's business...but at this point it's also lifeless, lacking stage width/depth and musicality...
Not to worry,...I wasn't expecting much right out of the box. As of this typing, its only been on for about 1/2 hr, and I think I am even now starting to hear some life ooze in...
Unlike the Korsun branded unit though, when I turn on the Dussun V8i I hear ZERO mechanical hum and ZERO hum from my speakers: A very good sign, and as an owner of the grey market purchased Korsun unit, I can say that there is obviously great merit to the whole power transformer finagling done by non-authorized grey market retailers. Needless to say, AAA Audio is an authorized Dussun retailer for the USA...
So, as I listen to various types of music- Jazz, Blues, Classical and R&B... experiment with different types of power cords, speaker wires, interconnects and using a tube pre ahead of the V8i... I will allow the unit to play thus giving it a fair shake at breaking in some so I can properly evaluate it. I am really hoping things get better with the staging and musicality (and they are)...its a sexy peice of gear and really makes you proud to own it. Everything about the build quality you've heard is true in spades. If it weren't for the hum issues with the Korsun unit I probably would have never gotten rid of it...but in the end its still about the sound...
More to come...
Product Weakness: | Somewhat lifeless, lacks sound stage width/depth and musciality. |
Product Strengths: | Nothing that hasn't already been said before: Build quality! Power! Dynamics! |

Nice review. And nice meeting you yesterday. How would you say the integrated compares to your SLP-88 and newly acquired DNA-2...;-}}

Very nice. Are those VTI amp stands?
Hiya Tim,...Not quite done with the review yet...I'm actually sitting down in between my SL-3's with the Dussun in the system right now...I'm listening to some Anita Baker "Rythm of Love"...and I think I am being slowly charmed by the V8i as the days go by...
BUT: Man oh man oh man...the DNA-2 is so smooth... I am using it to compare the Dussun with, since it reminds me so much of what it is I like in an amplifier: Dynamics & power, but without sacrificing musicality and stage dimension... I unequivocally endorse the DNA-2!
As of day 3 of owning the V8i, I would have to say that in comparison to the V8i, there is no comparison. The DNA-2 does everything right for me...
I listened long into the night to the Montana/SF combo. Very nice indeed. I am not one who is very skilled at reviews, but I can say that the Power 2 is a keeper. However, it wasn't a slam dunk against the McCormack monoblocks, they are extremely good too, and sounded excellent with the new speakers. But the Power 2 has almost the same bass control, the same transparency, and just enough tube bloom to make it very enjoyable. Definitely not your typical tubey sounding amp, but I mean that as a compliment.
It'll get a LOT better. As the previous posters have indicated, leave it on for a month or two straight, play a lot of music through it, and that stridency will go away. The V-8i is one of the best products to come through my second system in a while. It's here for the long haul. Congrats!

I am praying that it does...It actually is getting better albeit not as fast as I'd like it to... :o)
I was looking for the words to describe the wisp of irritability I was experiencing in my preliminary listening...and "stridency" fits it: close up, edgy, bright-sounding, or metallic. I am actually hearing that now while listening to Anita Baker, when she does her signature bluesy, sultry scatting and drawn out vocal expressions...or when the musical pallete becomes full...its a slight edginess or ringing thats not prominent, but there none the less...At this point with all the positive news I am getting from other owners as to what I can expect in the future, I am thinking of the best way to use both the V8i and the DNA-2 to bi-amp my SL-3's...
Has any of the V8i owners done this?
I have some Cardas Y adapters, and I am thinking that I could split the V8i Preamp output to send signal to the DNA-2 and the poweramp section of the V8i, but is this feasable, or recommended? The preamp to amp pins are forming a loop that doesn't touch the audio ground...
for the V8-i, im talking about not less than 45 days powered 24/7 and of course music playing as much as you can. It's doing magic driving my buddy's Ascents..!!:) Have some patience, you'll be rewarded !AP

I'll try to do that, but whats the idle current draw on this thing????

I agree with Audio Pharaoh. Hi AP!. You need to give it plenty of time to break in. There's a lot of amp there to break in. As you've stated, the build quality is excellent. I For those of you who are not familiar with Ping at AAA-Audio, he is a very good guy and a quality person. He will work with you and is a believer in quality customer service, "salt of the earth" and honest. With the 30 day money-back guarantee and the very reasonable price, ($1600 introductory price, last I heard)there is no reason for anyone interested in an integrated not to at least give the V8i a try. (250 watts per side, smooth powerful performance, great build quality, a no-brainer imo. Emerson

Yes, Ping is the man...
I may be receiving a Original Leonardo CD player from him to review against my Rega Jupiter since they are similarly priced players at about $2K respectively each...If I am tasked with this responsibility (this is for Grumpy) "By the power invested in me by all of you, I will be sure to refrain from posting any of my final opines until I have thoroughly reveiwed the unit to final conclusions"...

not to be too grumpy, but this "review" like all others goes into an AA "review" database that people might consult in conjunction with possible purchases. So, wouldn't it be better to simply make a post -- maybe call it "preliminary review" -- with the same content, without calling up the review template format?
That way, when you have reached your final conclusions about the product, you can put it in a review that others can use while these preliminary comments will be archived along with all of the other posts on General, only available to someone who does a search with the right criteria thrown in.
The idea here is that formal "reviews" here at AA are kinda' special and should reflect, as near as possible, the writer's final conclusions about a product, not first impressions.

I agree with your POV, and will try to adhere to that logic going forward...
