Any reviews/ thoughts/ opinions on this integrated amp- I'm also looking at the Rotel RA02, NAD C350, Jolida JD 1701A. (I have come across feedback/reviews for all of these except the Yamaha)I am upgrading from a horrible Panasonic stereo receiver. My speakers will be B&W 602 series 3 (barely used- great price from my cousin). Music is mainly rock, some jazz and classical. Room is a square (?8 x 14) office
Many thanks- this forum is outstanding and is a must for anyone who is considering a venture into a showroom

If it in any way resembles the AX-396 and AX-496 (its less powerful siblings), it's BAD! Now I mean this because I was buying a budget amp about 3 months ago and auditioned many of the available amps for my price range including NAD C300 and C320, Yamaha AX396 (and AX496), Denon PMA-655R, Marantz PM-4200, Sherwood AX5090 and Onkyo A9211. I decided on B&W DM303s finally and came back to audition every amp with this speaker. Yamaha was the worst! The muddiest, most artificial, most muted sound I heard in all these offerings considering I heard the Marantz (quite warm in tone) paired with some sweet sounding Kef UniQ Q1s that overall had a sound that edged on being too warm for my taste. The Yamaha actually wasn't just too warm, it was muddy, the trebles and the high-end were done poorly and although it had gobs of power, it couldn't hold a candle even to the NAD C300 in terms of the overall sound being pleasing to your ears (now remember that the B&W needs 25watts into 8ohms to start and that C300 is really underpowered at IIRC 30watts per channel into 8ohms).BTW, I bought the Denon finally for having the best RMS and dynamic power rating, a very pleasing neutre and crisp sound and having a phono stage. The NAD C320 had the best sound overall IMHO and had an overall more easy-listening tune to it as in a sweet reproduction (not so warm as the Marantz and a bit warmer than the Onkyo and Denon). I really recommend looking 'out of Yamaha' at that price range and seriously going for NAD (or Denon, or others your ears find better).

Not much change between AX590, AX592 & AX596 mainly cosmetics
AX596 now gets gold plated RCA connecters on rear & input selector reads DVD instead of CD I think.

I had a Yamaha RXV596, a AV receiver with radio tuner version, that might or might not be similar to your AX596. I later upgraded to the newer RXV630. The RXV630 were more tonal balanced (vs 596's emphasis on treble) and warmer and to me, more musical. Then I got a NAD C370 and now couldn't bear to listen to the Yamaha for music.Bottom line. For pure music reproduction, the Yamaha couldn't hold a candle compared to the dedicated integrated amp IMHO.

AX596 is not a receiver/tuner for home cinema its a 2 channel intergrated amplifier (preamp & poweramp) & for such a cheap unit it sounds amazingly good with good current, able to supply a 4ohm load with ease & lots of power which is very hard to find in its price range.
When using the pure direct switch, bypassing preamp except for the volume control it sounds very good when compared to other similar priced intergrated amps.
A good match with DM602 S3 but I would prefer Dynaudio BM6 or Audience 52, one of the few budget amps that can drive the Dyn's.

I used a Yamaha AX-890 integrated for a long time..to tell the truth it was really good..it was by far better than any Sony I heard..It is also better than the Rotel in my opinion..Rotel is more expensive as far as I know..I would really suggest you to go for AX-890..lots of power..140 watts at 8 ohms..It drove my Paradigm Studio 100 so successfully..then I was caught by the upgradus illness..lol..I have a MX-1 and CX-1 combo driving my Studio 100 but to tell the truth the only difference is that the sound got warmer which to tell the truth I did not enjoy a lot..At the end I can tell you that Yamaha AX-890 can beat many more expensive integrated amps so easily..
