Return to K&K Audio / Lundahl Transformers
70.17.193.148
It seems like a lot of the Lundahl owners prefer the pp typology. Are there many that have used the transformers for se output. What experiences have you had? Any comparisons with other brands? I've read the Lundahls sound lush and I've read they sound neutral. I'm interested in a pure and natural sound that does not try to do anything. I guess I'm looking at the James and maybe Magnaquest as well. Any thoughts?

I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. The single ended headphone amp that KevinC referred to, was built by me about a year and a half ago. I use it every day and really have enjoyed it. During its development, we used two Electraprint output transformers and when the Lundahl were substituted for them, the choice was obvious. The Lundahl LL1660/40mA are clearly more open, the tone and harmonics are more present and the spatial cues are outstanding. KevinC is right when he says that the sound is better than solid state designs. I like the Sennheiser 600 and 650 headphones. As an active headphone user, I am still surprised at the high quality sound that comes out of my amp.
I've built a single ended headphone amp and a single ended 211 amp using the Lundahl outputs and have been vary happy. The 211 amp has a great natural and open sound that fits in well with the other well reviewed and respected Art Audio amps I have.
I have designed, and one of the guys here, Doug Bergen, has built a SE headphone amp using a 6SN7GT directly coupled to a 2A3 loaded by an LL1660/40mA (4.5:1). Being a headphone listener he needed something better than the typical ss wonders he had been using and loves the amp. Other than that, I have little experience with SE amps and Lundahl transformers. You should check out www.audiodesignguide.com for lots of examples of SE amps using Lundahl outputs.
