July 6th, Live at Birdland New York - The Great Jazz Trio, Hank Jones

I just listened to a new SACD from The Great Jazz Trio (Hank Jones-piano, John Patittucci-bass, and Omar Hakim-drums). The title, “July 6th: Live at the Birdland New York”. It was recorded this last July 6, 2007.

I was prompted to seek out this album because about a week ago I went to Yoshi's, in Oakland. The jazz quintet led by drummer Roy Haynes, included Kenny Garret (sax), Nicholas Payton (trumpet), David Kikoski (pianist) and John Patitucci (bassist). The headliners were Haynes, Payton, and Garrett, and for the most part they lived up to their reputations (especially on Monks "Green Chimneys"). But I must say Patitucci kicked plenty butt on bass throughout the set.

And so, too, does he acquit himself masterfully with the Great Jazz Trio, on this album, thumpin' and bowin' on all cuts. (There are generous solo parts for each musician throughout the album). But on this album I think the MVP goes to Hakim. On all cuts, but especially, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", "Blue Monk", and "Moose the Mooch" (Charlie Parker) Hakim is practically off the hook. I'm talkin' about Chick Webb, Cozy Cole type of attacks but always in step with his mates. And the sound is hard driving' authentic. The recording (DSD), from the label Eighty-Eights, especially from Hakim, drew out a sense of realism that I didn't realize my system was capable. The sound quality of Hakim’s drums made me search for my Sheffield Labs direct-to-disc “Drum” LP. I do want to make a comparison.

Oh yes, Hank Jones plays wonderfully. He is what he is, the dean of Trio.
