Basically that is it. The two chips are the same from an audio standpoint but different from a control standpoint. The PCM1792 is best controlled by a microprocessor while the PCM1794 is best if you don't have a microprocessor. Of course there is lots of versatility if you have a microprocessor but for a basic DAC, which most people want, a hardwired PCM1794 is the way to go.

The evaluation board produced by TI has a PCM1792 and sounded good enough to encourage us to proceed with the project. The RAKK DAC sounds a lot better than the evaluation board. I attribute that to a lot of things but not the DAC chip.
