Replacing the motor is a bit more drastic than I had hoped :) but thanks for the suggestion.I've applied the tweaks Brian suggested (and further used some automotive / vehicle dampening material to line the inside of the motor). The noise certainly has been reduced, but it still louder than "dead quiet".
I'll live with for a while and see if I get used to it. I suspect I will. If not, I may find myself down a similar path you've taken :)
