I tried a number of different 'dampening' materials but did not get the noise down to a level that I was willing to tolerate. My solution was to replace the Premotec motor with a Maxon (2140.937) and a small homegrown DC regulator (standard application of a LT1086). I made me a PCB that fits like the original inside the original motor housing (can) and a small pulley. The only mod to the original housing is a wider hole in the top cover to accomodate the Maxon (plus two smaller holes for fixing the motor to the cover). The result is a very quiet motor can with good performance (no noticeable speed variations when checking with a 300Hz strobe) and also pretty stability over longer time (days/weeks).
