I went to HD today for some yard supplies and found a 12" Corkmat, the backside is softish plastic. I had to use an Xacto knife to cut the hole but it worked, of course there is no cutout for the record label but it sounds pretty good so far with limited testing. For $6.99 I had to give one a try.

BTW, I found these outdoors where they keep the grass seed and plant pots, they were in a promo rack. I'm thinking about trying this material on some wood blocks, both sides, as footers.

Tried cork on my TD-150, but found the Herbies mat easily, posted on February 20, 2010 at 14:29:12
bettered it.

I am as dense and pure as corkboard: does it come circular? To quote John Cale, " I hear hissing in the distance." What exactly is the benefit? Is there any math involved?

Yup, comes round, the idea is to isolate the record from the platter/damp vibrations, the only math involved is the $6.99 selling price. It's 2 mats in one, flip it over and try the plastic side, that breaks down to $3.495 per mat.

This is no ordinary cork mat. With the vast resources of Home Depot this a highly engineered plant pot coaster built to exacting tolerances.

philltubes, this absolutely brillant!! I love a cork matt and this just really fits the bill. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one always "thinking" turntable and vinyl everywhere I go. Fantastic.

Then it should be used for that, no? /nt\, posted on February 20, 2010 at 18:48:29

Thinkin' outside the box. Nice! I was just there today also and was looking at some cork matting they had on a huge roll, and some travertine tiles. It got me thinking about making some speaker isolation plinths.
I'll keep my eyes out for these plant coasters next time I'm there.
Thanks!!!

I was in HD an saw something similar (different brand) and bought it.. I am surprise now of how many people thought the same. Cork is thick and I placed a felt on top... I am not sure how some people can hear the difference or maybe my turntable (1200MK2) does not vibrate that much.. or I am just too old to hear in that range... never the less happy with the addition.

I saw thw cork mat with the 5 or 8 little circles... I am not sure if that isolates better (?) but definitively exposes the record more to external vibrations (spearkers, etc.) unless the record is properly isolated.

After following the Herd .. too many times to my embarassment I went back to the OEM Thorens platter mat.
Frankly It beats all the ones I tried.. trying to 'better' it.
A lesson in there.. somewhere.

It all depends on your turntable...its resonances, the voicing of your electronics and speakers, your hearing acuity, etc., etc, etc. I have a VPI and find no mat at all the preferred topping.

Thorens used a bonded cork mat on the TD150 design so you are in good company , Phil... :)

Correction...I'm referring to the one they re-designed 8-10 years ago and got rave reviews in the mid-price new T/T sections.
It may not have been 150, might have been 160(??) Any offers?
