The move took about 3 hours including refinishing the underside of the top plate (400 grit wet/dry + mineral spirits + elbow grease) left a decent finish. I may have a shop polish the top out but maybe not.

Sonically the difference is clearly audible as a greater solidity and stability to the image and a lessening of bass blurring. On first listen the table sounded leaner but extended listening revealed no lightening of the bottom end but an improvement in articulation that seemed lighter but was in fact more tuneful and bouncier.

Nice !

What's-his-name from Pink Triangle always claimed the motor wanted to be head-on to the front of the stylus.

How's the suspension working with this ?

The setup is just the same as with the motor in the original position. The suspension is spot on, a true pistonic motion. Just listened to Jazz Impression of Black Orpheus (MFSL 1112) and piano is palpably more solid and pitch stability is much improved.

Did you simply rotate the top plate of your LP12?, posted on August 2, 2007 at 17:31:41

It looks like you rotated the motor assembly from the rear to the front and the start button went from the front left to the rear left or you built a new top plate that allowed you to do this. Which one and did this really improve the sound?

and you did a really nice job on the finish. That's not the CF frame, though, is it? Also IIRC you had a DC motor kit installed, too. Just confirming as the motor looks different.

Stu,

who's got to rethink things a bit.

as the top plate is symmetrical except for the motor position. Yes it really did improve the sound. Clearly and not just in the audiophile ways. The music is more solid and believable if you will.

No, I haven't got the CF yet but I wanted to do the mods separately to have a frame of reference for the CF subchassis and armboard. Yes, that is an Origin Live "Advanced" DC motor kit. It too was a major improvement as compared to the Valhalla. I preferred it to the Lingo, especially when cost is factored in ($580 vs $1500).

I think so, I heard about the Ninja mod, posted on August 2, 2007 at 19:55:40

Hi,

That's very interesting - you've modified the turntable in the same way that a Pink Triangle modification of yesteryear did: the Pink Link!

I'm curious about the speed regulation of the Origin Live Motor, have you checked for a gradual increase of the speed of the platter as the stylus moves from the outer grooves to the inner grooves?

Best regards,

BK

The OL standard version didn't have the speed reg and I understand that this could be a problem. The Advanced and the Ultra are supposedly immune and I have heard no changes that would lead me to doubt this. I'll check.

Wonder if it's also benefitting from rotating from a drive position at 10:30 where the bearing journals were (maybe slightly) worn to a fresh contact-area at 7:30 ?

Again, great mod. What's the origin of this ? Simultaneously tricky & simple !

That is very possibly a contributing factor, I didn't even consider that. I'd love to take credit but I got the idea from the Funk Firm mod the Funk Link and the review in Stereophile.

you are talking CF from the guy in Australia, right? Sounded pretty good and cheap vs. 13K.

since three screws hold down the main bearing.

Great stuff... I was also think of doing this mod after reading Art's review in Stereophile. Another option I was considering was to get a machine shop to drill out the necessary holes at the 7 O'clock position.

Did you have any problems with the SS top plate's curvature. The SS plate is orginally convex shaped if you flip it over will that curvature become concave or will it straighten out nicely after you bolt everything together ?

Yes, the Ninja mod was Mana's take on turbocharging the LP12.

when I learned to set up the LP12 the guy who showed me simply bent the plate to fit. That's what I did and it works perfectly. It is a strong plate and requires quite a bit of force to bend however.

The OLs use I x R compensation which gives the motor a very flat speed vs torque curve. The motor speed change is probably less than that due to belt creep at this level.

I don't know how OL tackles the issue of thermal drift which is a fair bit trickier to remove.

Hi Robert,

Glad to hear it really does give better pitch stability with the motor in the 7 o'clock position - that's always something which devotees of non-sprung TTs complain about with the LP12! :-))

So that's definitely on my list! :-)) (And I have that same album! BTW, have you heard "Black Orpheus" by the Isao Suzuki Trio, on Three Blind Mice TBM63? That's a sensational version of the tune IMO! :-)) )

I presume the subchassis didn't make Friday's mail? :-((

Regards,

Andy
