Following Waxxy's lead on getting electron microscope images of stylus in grooves.

When you think about it, it's really amazing that the needle in a vinyl groove can result in sound.

Please clean those needles!! They look like they've been off-roading. :)

Not only sound, but music! Sweeping symphonies and massed voices. It's truly a marvel of micro-engineering/art.

Agreed. Sometimes I just look at the 'table and think "what the hell is going on here?"

I marvel, "what made someone think of that?"

That crusty stuff on the stylus is scary. I don't think just using a carbon fiber stylus brush is going to get rid of it. I wish we could see some before and after pics. Is there a liquid stylus cleaner that is safe?

Biff,

Ditto. When my 9 year-old niece first saw/heard a record playing on my system, I explained in simple terms what was going on. She simply looked at me with complete amazement on her face then watched the turntable spin music for another 10 minutes before finally walking away. Now, at 10, every time she visits and hears music playing, she runs right to the turntable and expresses disappointment if a CD is playing.

I guess CDs are even more mysterious, since you can't see what's going on in that box. But not nearly as fascinating.

When we consider VTF, maybe the force is with us. Has anyone heard the Obiwon cartridge?

It is astounding to me that a groove and a needle make music (nt), posted on July 20, 2012 at 11:21:19

I wonder if all of our needles look like that under a high power scope, or if that one was particularly crusty.

THAT I would love to see as I still can't fathom how different sounds come from stereo speakers. I find it hard to imagine how a symphony is re-created from that bumpy road but then to consider it's happening on both sides at the same time...

Have you ever seen that video of the rumble strips on pavement laid out in such a manner that they play the William Tell overture when you drive over them at the right speed? It was years ago that I saw it. It must be out there on YouTube somewhere. Same concept as the record but the car is the stylus.
