Enjoying my new purchase of a pair of Canton Ergo Passiv speakers this morning. These do not show up too often, and this pair was close enough for me to drive to pick them up (and check them out before I bought). I didn't steal them, but I got a fair price, considering that these are in NM condition and have the optional pedestals. I will admit to a certain amount of nostalgia, as my first pair of quality speakers was a pair of Canton Quinto 540s in 1981 or so. I really wanted the Ergos, but there was no way that I could afford them (the Quintos were $1,000, these were $2,600). This model was produced up intil 92, long after its contemporaries in the line had been replaced. There were two iterations. I believe that this is the later one. They appear to have been purchased in '86. The earlier one had the spring-loaded terminals that wouldn't accept anything much heavier than lamp cord. These have better screw-on terminals. I listen to orchestral music more than anything else, and these are great orchestra speakers. They are replacing Vienna Acoustic Beethovens (the early version). I like the VAs, but their weakness is in the mid-bass, which really compromises their ability to reproduce the weight and impact of an orchestra. Of course, no speaker can-if that's what you want to hear, buy a ticket! The Cantons, however come much closer. No, they are not quite as detailed, open and spacious sounding as the VAs, but to me, they present a much more convincing overall representaion. I still need to play with setup, etc. I had the VAs in the middle of the room, with the listening position up against the wall, which was to address the mid-bass issues (partly the less than ideal room). The Cantons will, I think, be better closer to a wall. They have plenty of bottom end, and they also have a rear-firing ambiance speaker that's doing nothing where they are now. My back just hurts too much from sitting in the car for me to schlep everything aound right this minute. The specs say that they are nominally 4 ohm, but I am driving them with 25 watts of push-pull 300B tubes and there is not a hint of strain there. I have gone through a lot of speakers since my original Cantons (Martin-Logan Quest, JM Lab Micro Utopias, Audio Note Kit AN-E, more). I think I may be getting a little tired of the audiophile merry-go-round. All of those speakers did some things better than these, but for what I listen to, these may be the best all-round. At any rate, I have something that I like better, and some money in my pocket. What could be bad about that?!? |
