Is your small room have a noise floor of 40 some db?

What is it that runs my spl meter up to 40db and at what level does one measure sweeps of room for acoustic measurements in REW?

My average is about 50db. But looking at a spectrum analysis, most of it is at very low frequencies.

In my case, from 200hz and up, the graph show <32db. So in the important ranges, its much better than the average of 50db might indicate.

When using REW it's important to play the sweep at least 40 dB louder than the room's background noise. Otherwise you won't see the full extent of nulls, which can be 40 dB deep (or even deeper).

So . . . is there a db level that is recommended for sweeps other than 40 db above noise floor?

That would put me at a measure of roughly 85db.

As a follow up question . . . Most of the time I listen in the 85db average range. Some of the rock music I listen to I am at 102db average during those listening sessions. Should one sweep where one listens?

While measuring 40db above the noise floor maybe ideal, your going to see big lulls (if you have them) at 25-30db above the noise floor also.

In my way of thinking, whether a lull shows up as -25 or -40 makes little difference in the sense that I am going to treat it in any case.

Most of my sweeps I run at 65-70db and I have no trouble finding those areas in need of attention. Loud sweeps annoy me and after hours of them cause me anxiety :)

Whats more important than +40db > noise floor sweeps, imo, is to make sure your running 1/24 octave smoothing (1/48 is ok also). 1/3 or 1/6 octave smoothed results gloss over way too much.
