Hello all...
I'm finishing my basement room (about 22x10x7, concrete floor, drywall and insulation over block walls). The ceiling is exposed rafters, about 7' at the bottom. There's a lot of romex and a ton of electrical boxes due to all the circuits I put in for different equipment and lighting. I'd LIKE to keep them accessible.

Questions:

Will 6" or so inches of fluffy insulation between the rafters be enough to make a passable bass trap?

Can I put the insulation above the boxes, closer the the floor above? Or, should it be closer to the bottom? Or does it matter?

After everything's in, I wanted to us a sprayer to paint the entire ceiling flat black...but exposed kraft paper is a code violation, and I obviously can't paint unfaced insulation. Suggestions? I understand I could put FSK over the insulation and paint that, but I don't know where to get it, or if it's a passable option, acoustically. Other suggestions for dealing with this issue (that don't cost a fortune)?

Many thanx in advance!!

How about some stone wool Stone Wool Insulation Batts:

It looks like something I would add to my basement ceilings.

I forget that you wanted a paintable solution. If you can add drywall on top than you are okay.

I'd fill the joist spaces completely, which is probably more like 12 inches of fiberglass. That will be much more effective than only 6 inches. Then stretch and staple open weave black fabric over the joist bottoms. Dyed burlap looks great and is relatively cheap.

Ethan,
Thanx for the reply. I'll use the thickest insulation I can manage. I considered something like the fabric idea previously, but code requires that any electrical boxes are accessible, and I wouldn't want to have to re-cover the ceiling if I needed to gain access to one or more. I suppose I could construct a number of removable frames and cover them with fabric, though I still like the idea of painting everything.
Would the HF reflections I would likely get from covering the insulation with FSK be a major problem, do you think? I'm sure I'll do something about first reflection points eventually.

Thank you.

Thanx for the reply.

Would this make an acceptable bass trap? If so, what thickness would be required? What advantages does it offer over fluffy fiberglass?

Drywalling the ceiling would largely eliminate it's function as a bass trap, I think.

As long as the ceiling reflection points are fully absorbent you'll be okay.
