No personal experience, but I've included both a paragraph from a review from The Absolute Sound, and also a link to a comparative review on the web.

"purer" are you joking. Your choice of that word makes your observation ridiculous...The price difference is what the buyer should focus on...Anyways there is no longer a choice....Pay up on the price rise for nearly identical speaker give the fact Magnepan won't say what components have been 'changed'.There are many rumors but no confirmations

I believe I stated that in the post.

Sorry I was careless. Apologies to you They have long been moronic and careless in their language.

I own the 1.7. I was curious what justified the price increase. I could not hear the speakers side by side. I remember Magnepan modified the tweeter units on the i...The 1.7i is slightly brighter than the 1.7 which for many equates with pure or clearer. . The 1.7 is bright enough and required extensive room modifications (placement to tame it) The 1,7i would be even more challenging, because it is a little more in your face...They are both great speakers. I thought the 1.7i a little fatiguing...I can listen for hours on the 1.7. I own the 3.7 also find it bright. So listen to the former more.(3.7 is not as balanced) because of the tweeter...My weird 2 cents

Have you tried playing around with the tweeter attenuation on these models you have?, posted on March 17, 2025 at 09:13:21

It certainly can help with excessive brightness issues. A high-quality equalizer, like the Schiit Loki, would also be a good option if you wanted to address things further.
I have both the 3.6R with the true ribbon tweeter, and a modded 1.6 with the standard QR tweeter. To me, the true ribbon tweeter is a game-changer, and I much prefer the 3.6R. Currently using a 1.5 ohm resistor on the ribbon.

Yes Thank you. One odd thing that I did;probably many other have done the same and it makes a big differed . I have 4lbs of iron weights on each of the legs.. 32 lbs in total.
I will look into your suggestions.. I do have oak floors. ;so the room is relatively resonant and 12' foot ceilings. But I live in an apt building and dare not use sub woofers...I have relative truce with my neighbors I play a lot of organ music....Always toyed with adding Gr research sub woofers...but.....
Thanks

Audio review bidness, is part of the industry, and is not interested in consumers except as paying customers of said industry.

It's quite remarkable what this arrangement accomplished really. A stereo is firmly established as a luxury-class good.

We all know this, right? I know it used to be forbidden to wave off "audio reviewers" on this site. But it's 2025, and this surely is over? Or are we still pretending unbiased ears are only reporting what they clearly heard?

I trust the hobbyists way, way before I trust the reviewers. It's why I went Magnepan, after all.
