 Most impressive new speaker of the show would be the Diptyque top of the line model and Michael Hoasten's personal pair, were a real eye opener at the show. Planer bass does not come cheap though, $50k and built in France. I really want to hear them in a decent listening room, playing some music I'm familiar with, to me it felt like there there was a subwoofer was in the room.

 the ribbon tweeter is not also a line array type. Looks kinda lonely as compared to the other two drivers. $50k price tag is comparable to my U-790s.

 Interesting. Seems to me the tweeter would suffer from vertical beaming.

 It seems they have shortish tweeters in all their models.

 My preference is not to have those kinds of dissimilarities as I find they tend to distract. If you're going to do a line array, do a line array!

The KLH 9 struck me the same way with its lone tweeter in the middle.

The quasi ribbon tweeter beside the quasi ribbon midrange which is obviously separate from the bass panel. I've always wondered how much of a sound quality difference that make? Especially being that close in proximity to each other vs say a 30.7.

 Art designed the 9 towards the end of the 1950s.

Doubles (like mentor JWC once had) or triples were quite the thing back in the day!



If you follow the link, you'll find Dr. West's name mentioned there as that's where he got his start. Interestingly, the triples depicted foretell the wide angled flat facet approach he later adopted with Sound Lab.

 All I can say is ... removing IMD by having the mid range panel on a separate sheet of mylar from the bass panel gave my 'Frankenpans' more resolution than my IIIas had.

 Well, most people are not going to take their speakers apart like that. :)
It is what it is, so the mechanical crossover just needs to be embraced....in the best way you can.

The series crossover schemes are okay (in one sense) because they keep the adjacent drivers wired in the same polarity.

 Sure, Dave ... but I didn't "take my IIIAs apart". :-))

Instead, I sourced:

* a pair of T-IVa mid/ribbon panels (from a guy in Detroit who was using the T-IVa bass panels to augment his 3.5s)

* and a pair of 2.5s (from a guy in Rome, who had them in a cupboard - as the ribbons had blown).

The 2.5 bass panel is the same size as the IIIa bass panel - likewise, the T-IVa mid panel is the same size as the IIIa mid panel.

And the ribbons are identical.

So my 'Frankenpans' were, effectively ... IIIas with the mid being on a separate sheet of mylar to the bass driver.

 Yeah, I'm well aware of your Frankenpan configuration.
You 'effectively' did take your speakers apart. :)
And it's certainly not a process that most Magenpan owners would even consider.

Thus, they're left with the integrated configuration....such as it is. The task is to make it work as well possible.

Just rarely agree.

His combination is a clever blend like HP's QRS/T-1D of yore. You fail to comprehend there was nothing to *take apart*. ;)

 Well, you can't agree or disagree with what you don't understand. And just because you disagree doesn't mean you're correct.
You have some experience with audio equipment usage, but it's obvious you don't have any technical background. Numerous data points have proven that.

Regarding Andy's setup, I'm perfectly aware. He's outlined it on here for years, and I've had the occasional chat with him offline for years.

If my usage of the phrase "take apart" triggers you into thinking my comprehension of his system if faulty, you're quite mistaken.

As I said, you're free to not read my posts. But, you do, so apparently you are interested in them. :)

 I'm looking forward to a proper review in Stereophile or HiFiNews, with corresponding measurements, to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. I would also like to hear them in a decent dealers demo room, playing my own music.

 Yeah, it would be interesting, but I suspect they would not measure well using the typical measuring techniques of John Atkinson or Paul Miller.
I don't have much faith in "reviewers" being able to properly characterize speakers like this.

And, it's quite an esoteric product that might not even attract their attention.

 Ditto for the NEO8 mod.

Off axis performance is also improved by reducing the mid/high center-2-center distance.

The Diptyque's mid/high center-2-center distance looks very small (but they are both still on the bass baffle).
