6B4Gee wouldn't that be nice ...

So, Doc, any plans for an ET amp based on the new Sovtek 6B4G? The tube is starting to create quite a stir amongst Bay Area DIY tube audio nuts, and lots of others as well. How fortunate are we to have access to a new directly-heated triode, single-plate, for a little more than $20 each! This tube is nirvana for the frugal tube audio DIY'er. To top it all off, the Sovtek 6B4G reportedly sounds great. Now all we need is an ET-designed amp to put it to good use. I've got absolutely nothing against 2A3's or 300B's except the steep prices being charged for the good ones. I'm guessing that the Afterglow/Paraglow circuit with some mods may be able to accommodate the 6B4G, but then again, what do I know? Maybe it will require a new design to extract the best performance. Given the cheap price of the tube, how about something with a pair of these in parallel per channel for a little extra oomph? Doc, we await your thoughts ...

Oh heck, we already did that. I agree, the Sovtek 6B4G is a really great tube. Appears to be another sleeper, like the Valve Art VA5300.
Tucker converted his Afterglows to Sovtek 6B4Gs. With a 5965 you can put its heater and the 6B4 fil on the same secondary, even though the 6B4 fil floats the secondary at 150V, because the 5965 just happens to be a tube that can handle a 200V H-K differential.
Unfortunately the 6B4 is a bit hummy. The best approach would be to add a separate filament trans, a rectifier, and a current regulator for DC to the 6B4 fil.
Of course to fit this in a Paraglow first you will have to find a shoehorn...

I wouldn't parallel them. You would most likely loose some of the superb resolution of the monoplate.
You want more power, go to a VA5300 or an 845.

In the not so near future we will probably do some fancier amps, and the tubes mentioned above are all under consideration for such projects.

Paul:

I have been playing around with, in my head, a 6B4G modification to the ParaSEX kit. I am really excited by the idea of a cheap, good, triode, parallel-fed of course, to enjoy a little Cannonball or Miles with.

I am in the process of moving, and once I do, I will be looking forward to getting some soldering done within the next 6 months or so.

What sort of things has the Bay Area Enthusiasts been up to with this tube?
