Foreplay in the Atma-Sphere.....

Hi. I was wondering what people thought of this combination. Currently I go direct to M60 MKIIs using a Resolution Audio CD50 and I'd like to change the presentation (add some body etc) a bit without losing much thats good about my current setup. On paper, would adding the Foreplay be something to consider? One more thing. Since all my ICs are XLR terminated and I don't want to change them, can the Foreplay be easily fitted with XLRs? TIA.

This is another question I am asked maybe once a month. Unfortunately the topology of the Foreplay is inherently single ended. No easy way to change to balanced output. Remember Doc is a dyed-in-the-wool SE guy.

If I was going to a do a balanced pre, I would be inclined to try a differential circuit ( for a useful balanced input) with a Brooklyn B7 parafeed line transformer, which has a center tapped secondary allowing for balanced output operation. The parts would be a tight squeeze on the Foreplay chassis, but an enterprising soul might figure out that it could all be squoze on there...I'd be interested in seeing the result. I think Lynn Olson has balanced diff parafeed output circuit design on his website.

Can't you just wire in XLRs as if they were RCA without actually changing any of the topology. I've heard of BAT adapters that convert an SE RCA cable to XLR. Can you go the other way? Or as I hoped, just wire in XLRs in to the Foreplay?

Hi Bryan,

I would like to note that kind of circuitry used in the Atma-Sphere sounds significantly better if fed from a truely balanced source (we have tried with an 845 and an 2A3 OTL - Push-Pull for directly driving Eletrostatic pannels). After this Morgan Jones made some measurement which confirmed much lower distortion at all harmonics with balanced drive to the inputs.

Methinks you'd be best off, using a Preamp having a transformer balanced Output. My Friend Jon went from a passive arrangement (a'la Audio-Synthesis "Passion") to the Euridice Preamplifer he build with a little Input from me.

He has since build a second Pre for his second System. We recently tried a few mod's which moved the unit closer to a Parafeed Scheme (Ultra-Path Circuitry) with a notable improvement.

So I'd be tempted to try something like Doc B's 5965 based Linestage, using a Nickel Magnequest Output Transformer in parafeed and a C4S loading and maybe a WE437A or 417A as Amplifier Valve if I was you.
