Something weird happened in the showroom this past weekend. We sold through a pretty decent amount of demo two channel electronics, leaving a couple systems essentially out of commission. And since we run a very tight ship regarding inventory, I had to figure out to get these systems up and running until reinforcements arrived. So, I brought in a spare Audio Research SP-9MKIII preamp and the above mentioned Yamaha, and connected that to our display VPI Scout with Signature arm and Benz Ace cartridge. Display speakers are the B&W 803D's. The analog VU meters on the MX-2000 are incredibly fast. The fastest I've ever seen. And it's probably the prettiest amp I own. Damn thing is heavy too. I didn't like waltzing around with it and was happy when I set it up. I just let it play all day yesterday and came in early this morning so I could sit, enjoy my coffee and listen to the set up. The Yamaha is outstanding. This 130 WPC amp drove the B&W's like it had twice its rated power. It sounded so good, and was so detailed that I kept reaching for the volume on the SP-9MKIII preamp. It never sounded hard, or compressed, and the synergy between the MX-2000 and the 803D's was obvious. Bass was responsive, extended and textured. This amp has balls. Separation between instruments was spacious. Right now I'm playing with a bunch of equipment. Anyone who's been in this hobby and works in the industry long enough eventually accumulates a lot of toys. The Yamaha came to me as a trade in and I picked it up at a great price. That was 4 years ago. I still can't part with it. After listening to it for the last two days and probably needing to remove it for new product by the end of this week, I'm disappointed that it has to go. Everyone at the shop is pretty impressed with it. It competes very well with some of the contemporary amps I own, and it's competing with some amps I sell as well. The amp is rare, was apparently pretty expensive when it made it's debut, and frankly it sounds like an expensive amp. If you've seen this, became curious and then backed away for some reason, don't. It's definitely worth your consideration. An amp to build a retro Japanese system around for sure. "Hope is a good thing. Maybe, the best of things. And no good thing ever dies." |
