Street price of the DL-S1 is $600-900 and the AT ART7 at $1300, they are kind of different money.
It wouldn't surprise me if the AT trumps the Denon - but by how much? Are we at "dimishing returns?"

Hey! I have a blog now: http://mancave-stereo.blogspot.com or "like" us at https://www.facebook.com/mancave.stereo

Considering the OP's budget of $2K, I'm more curious about diminishing returns up in the stratosphere of cartridges $2K+ above either of these TOTL offers from "the mainstream." Also, the question of why these mainstream TOTL offers are so little known and under-reviewed. (That's no surprise-- the ART7 isn't even distributed outside of Japan.) The ART7 is the first MC I've owned that competes well with some of the great MM/MIs that are significantly cheaper than either of these MCs(e.g. Grace F9 with Soundsmith OCL), Precept ML550.) But that's a different discussion... I hope that somebody around here takes a chance on the ART7 and reports back.
To answer more directly, compared to DL-S1 the ART7 has more natural timbre and organic embodiment. Very lively dynamics. I think it does everything a little better-- which taken together justifies the price difference. BTW, it took a good 50 hours to reveal all this.
Where did you buy yours?
It looks so much like an OC9 variant.
Does it sound OC9ish or AT33 ish?
Now I see AT Japan is coming up with the ART9 ( one above the 7 )
I bought mine on eBay from 2juki. Not the cheapest source, but reliable, well packed, quick delivery, and the eBay bucks program returns $35.
No comparing it to other AT MCs, as my previous AT experience is all MM/MI(AT20SS and Precept ML550.) I may try an AT50ANV.
how do you deal with retip on the ART7?
Does 2Juki can have it retipped by Audio Technica in Japan?
The problem with any of Audio Technica Anniversary series cartridges is that after the production, they stop supporting them all together. So you are stuck with their replacement cartridge whatever it maybe.
It's c'est la vie, then, I guess. Off to soundsmith, expert, or axel scheurholtz in germany.
If you look at the specs on the ART9, it appears to be a higher output version of the ART7. It is unlikely the ART9 has non-permeable coil formers like the ART7. Therefore, even if it is a little more expensive, I suspect the ART7 is the better sounding cartridge. At any rate, my attraction is for cartridges with non-permeable coil formers regardless of their ultra low output. My favorite cartridge of all time was the original Ortofon MC-2000 with a rated output of only 0.05-mV. I used it with its matching T-2000 SUT, which had a turns ratio of 1:56.
Best regards,
John Elison
