using those output tubes for nearly 5 years. I used EH EL84s which were Mullard clones. Buttery smooth on top, albeit just a tad rolled off. I also tried Sov-Tek EL84Ms which were cleaner on top but still in no way "etchy" or hard.
Something is amiss if they sound that way in your integrated.

Follow Ups:
I run a number of amps with 6BQ5s...both SET and PP. I use them with a pair of Fostex full rangers and a DIY 6SN7 based preamp. I have never pulled any 6BQ5s because I felt their sound was lacking in any way, or had itchy highs. I have hundreds in my stash to choose from....but feel no need to roll. You may want to look in another direction other than the tubes you're using.

Yes, that's why I also use PP and SE KT-88 amplifiers and EL-34 based amplifiers...
