This is way outside my usual province, so I thought I'd ask for advice here. If one had a need to plug a laptop into pro-style powered monitors (line level) for playback, I assume there is a more elegant solution than 1/8 to 1/4 adapters. Everything I can find on a quick glance with quality AD and USB to 1/4 seems to be for recording, not playback. Can someone give me a quick steer?
Thanks!

Try 1/8 to 1/4 or XLR patch cables first. If it sounds OK, there you go. Or use a USB sound device with RCA outputs. There's the ADSTech "Instant Music"; it has RCA line-level in and out, Toslink optical S/PDIF in and out, and can be had for around $50 on sale. It's based on the same Burr-Brown (TI) USB sound chip that's found in more expensive sound things, for what that's worth. If you want to get fancier, connect up a DAC via Toslink and drive the powered monitors from that. I'd use a Behringer SRC-2496 (since I have one), and it would give me the reassurance of knowing the laptop was electrically isolated from the monitors.
Thanks! Looks like the combination I need to be looking for is USB + DAC. That would provide a portable digital patchbox, so to speak, that I could use in a variety of settings. Appreciate the steer in the right direction.

Maybe I'm overcomplicating things. I see that Hosa, for instance, offers 3.5mm stereo to 1/4" mono 'Y' cables as well as XLR. Is this sufficient?
