Miles was "responsible" for some great music. I use the word "responsible" because to me he was a bandleader, as Duke Ellington was. But he was totally unlike the Duke, in that his actual writing skills were pretty basic. He relied heavily on his sidemen and had some great creative artists in guys like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Plus he used great arrangers like Gil Evans. Most of his own compositions could have been written on the back of an envelope. What he had was vision, taste and a genius for putting talented people together - that bit was like the Duke. But unlike the Duke, he was a major soloist in the band, mostly taking the first solo. Well - you either think his actual trumpet playing was original and tasteful, or like me you think most of it - especially in his "flurries of sound" period - was a crashing bore. I'd happily edit out the majority of his trumpet solos and leave the rest of the band, who are usually inspired soloists. For this reason I stopped listening to his bands. I listen to his sidemen where you get the real deal - Kieth Jarrett, Herbie, Wayne, Bill Evans, Joe Zawinul.... And if I want a trumpet player to listen to I'll put on some of the great Freddie Hubbard, who was simply in another universe as a trumpet player.
