where you still getting into it with the folks here even years ago ?
I am all ears ....
Follow Ups:
The Peter Gunn years were very interesting. If your Maggie's weren't Gunned, they weren't saying anything.
I never fell for it, I always thought his prices were crazy compared to the cost of the speakers.
Darn well worth the cost, and they look way better than they did stock. As far as cost, is this place not called the Audio Asylum?
Concur. I'll never sell mine
I don't know that the prices were crazy. John was providing a woodworking service/labor and could set prices at whatever he felt appropriate. Potential customers could do as they pleased.
The issues arose because of the ridiculous technical claims regarding the modifications. To this day, the slander and silly rhetoric aimed at myself, Josh, Wendell, Mart, etc, still remains on his website. I think he felt we were negatively affecting his business model. :)
Actually, I think probably the opposite was the case, as the "discussion" here on the MUG gained him some attention and clicks to his website and phone calls to cultivate further customers. The aftermarket/DIY modification opportunities for Magnepan's have always been a viable avenue for owners. I've always strongly advocated the DIY approach, but the paid service option is certainly an alternative for those feeling in over their heads.

Nice work, and definitely improvements in some areas, definitely dynamics and transparency. However, though, the midrange was too forward, due to his crossover design, I'm sure. Moved on to 3-series and Harbeths, but still have the Magnestands.

Easily fixable with some equalization at line level though.
However, I believe some folks enjoy the overly prominent midrange.
The series crossover does have the advantage of a nearly flat impedance load that some amplifier setups might benefit from.

extension and delicacy of the TR. But I may still pull them out at some point for a reevaluation with some equalization.

The ribbon tweeter models are a different realm. But, John declared those models not appropriate for his modification and claimed that the QR models so modified out-performed the ribbon models anyways. :) (One of the many highly questionable claims.)
Regardless, it's good that you hung onto them. Nothing that he did de-valued the speakers in a permanent way and they can be improved upon considerably.....in my humble opinion....with equalization.

worth messing around a bit with the Magnestands.

I do my utmost to never speak against others, but...
I know back in the day he had some ire aimed at some in this forum. I looked it up, had no clue to what degree, and so many years later. Def some, uh, interesting comments.
I do miss his sense of humour though :)
One thing's for sure, when he was around, it was a lively place. :-)
I remember looking into some of the mods and thinking if I spent that much, I'd rather have it go directly to Magnepan.
