The arts on Television in 1963...-.we have fallen so far it's hard to believe
Follow Ups:
and there wasn't much like it then and really hasn't been since.
You didn't/don't have a RJG able to do that. Right place/right time.
I was first exposed to it at SF jazz festivals in the early 80's, where
a few (rare at the time) jazz films were shown on a big screen.
I couldn't believe such a thing existed! Was VERY thrilled when
some were issued on VHS.
What did transpire was talk shows where you saw mainstays such as
Erroll Garner or Buddy Rich perform and then shoot the shit with a host
that had some knowledge of the music or at least liked it enough to
have some say in who was booked, and would support their faves.
Merv Griffin show was good - the rap with the band (Jack Sheldon,
Ray Brown, et al) usually fun. As for as more "outside" or arty music,
that was ALWAYS tough to find - even in the rock, R&B, country fields.
Mainstream rules in TV land.
That Frank Zappa was on The Mike Douglass show is akin to a miracle.
You could catch some good jazz on late night TV in the 70's once in awhile.
Or on Hugh Hefner's show.
Too bad Johnny Carson didn't dig The Art Ensemble!!

Then there was Steve Allen, so down to earth as an artiste-a it's easy to overlook.
