I think I like his solo work the best - undiluted Monk.
What do you think?
Follow Ups:
Any Monk, is excellent Monk.
and IMO some of the best solo piano music, period.

Excellent. I need to get some solo monk. Thanks
His solo work often shows his connection to the stride style of piano - the left hand playing a low note on beats 1 & 3 and a chord in the middle range on beats 2 & 4. A style perfected by James P Johnson, a pianist Monk named as influential to his own playing.
There are some 1954 solo piano tracks from France, and quite a few others recorded in England much later in his career - I think the ones recorded in England may have been his last.
IIRC, Monk's fingernails were long at these sessions, and you can hear them clicking on the piano keys. Apparently Mrs. Monk heard this too, and stopped the session so she could clip them for him.
The link will give you more information on these sessions, very worthwhile if you can find them.
Thanks!
And I have at least a half dozen of his solo albums.
Also really like his work with Charlie Rouse on tenor sax.
Life is hard. It's harder when you're stupid.
I love Monk's solo work. But I also love Charlie Rouse!
So many pianists just carry on where others left off.
The great innovators started from the ground up and re-designed playing the piano. I'd include guys like Andrew Hill. Nobody else would play comping like this, 4 to a bar, and play such a wacky solo. I love this track.
