I wouldn't quite go that far, the balanced output found on the SCD-1 is pretty clearly an afterthought to cheaply differentiate it from the SCD-777ES. (Don't believe me, take a real close look at the schematic.)In any case the stock SCD-1 and SCD-777ES have way too many op-amps in the signal path. (I've worked hard to simplify mine with some significant improvement in performance.)

I fully disagree, I have carefully reviewed the balanced output schematic and like I said before the sound performance can be greatly improved by replacing stocked components.
How is a pair of OP-Amps (one per channel) be “way too many”? I have tried it with & without op-amps and if you use high quality op-amps, the sound performance is much better. Bottom line, it is all about personal taste.
Using high quality caps and resistors also will bring an entire new sound performance.

Been there done that, forgot about the mixing stage (bal to unbal converter) gyrators and the hybrid op-amp discrete output stage? All of that before the two op-amps that convert the unbalanced output to balanced. Why didn't they just add another output stage like the one they use on the unbalanced output and use an inverting input configuration instead?
I do think the SCD-1 and SCD-777ES are good performers, but with the stock topology are outclassed by a number of obviously much more expensive products. I own an SCD-777ES that I have extensively modified. I spent a lot of money on upgrading op-amps, resistors and caps in the audio path only to discover that taking the balanced outputs right off of the I/V converters through a UTC A-20 line to line matching transformer sounded better still. I'm planning to use THS4131 for I/V conversion into the A-20 when I have time to make some small boards.
Others maintain that you should tap the dsd signal before the tact chips, this I have not done (yet) because the dsd is dual differential (per channel) and I believe that using both pairs of them is preferable from a noise/dnr standpoint.
Yes... from many different posts here in the past, and what I have read elsewhere that is the general consensus...
