i removed my loudnes switch from the volum control and added the 4.7k resistor like the writeup suggests and now its humming up a store. Any Ideas?

When tinkering around the Volume Control, you really have to be careful to make SURE you keep the black ground wires intact. If one winds up becoming disconnected, you will have nothing but hum.
I hope this puts you on the right track. Let us know what you find.

I figured it out the two ground pins on the volume switch were not connected to each other. Thanks for the heads up Bill. The volume switch still only really seems to be usable in the 10:00 - 1:00 position though. Which is better alps or dynaco replacement?
The version sold by Radio Shack has a loudness tap as well. Unfortunately, you *may* have to buy several to find one that tracks similarly between sections. (Of course, if you have a "friend" at Radio Shack, he *might* let you try several and bring back the ones that don't track correctly.
Hope this helps.
(I'm REALLY glad you found the problem! Good work!)

Well I purchased and installed the radio shack 100k pot. I saw the loudness taps and tested them with and without the resistors and decided to leave the resistors on. The sound is B -E- A-utiful!! The channels have never tracked so well nor has the volume control been so nice and even throughout the entire range. I've been at this thing solid the past two days and its a real treat to have it working right. Thanks again for the solid advice Bill!!

I disconnected one of those ground wires temporarily but I remembered to reconnect it. I tried taking the two wires and two caps off the taps on the volume control and tested it, it hummed. Then I put the 4.7k resistors in as suggested in the writeup and still hummed. I guess I'll just have to play some more with it.
