I've got a feeling that the bearing your describing is like my old VPI HW-19 bearing, where I would have to let the spindle (attached to platter) settle into the well. The BIX has a shaft which mounts to the plinth, and the inverted bearing shaft drop down over this base shaft which is what has a small concave well at the top in which sits the ball bearing. The inverted bearing shaft has a teflon disc at the top which will then sit atop the ball bearing.
