Hello Xavier,
The Quickie uses the 3S4 directly heated pentode. (Also known as the DL-92). For the batteries, I would be careful about the rechargeable batteries, as they tend to have lower output voltage than their Alkaline counterparts (1.2V vs 1.5V on the D-cell).
The headphone output is provided by a very familiar output transformer ;)
Fets are another option, but they will eat up the battery current in a hurry.
Follow Ups:
Will the opt be wired for 8 ohms? What is the power output? I'm dreaming of it driving some very high efficiency speakers (116db /watt).
thks
Boy, I sure wish this little guy had the guts to make useful power at 8 ohms. The output transformer is setup so that the ideal load is 250 ohms (great for your Senn HD600/580/800, Beyer 770/880/990, etc), but it still holds up reasonable well on some low impedance AT AD700's I have also. I would imagine that 600 ohm cans would absolutely sing on this amplifier.
It doesn't have nearly the cajones to drive the AKG-K701, and that isn't a huge shock for me.
PJ could chime in on the actual power output at 8 ohms, although I suppose it wouldn't be impossible to measure today also. (I epxect around 1/10 of a watt).
(Incidentally, your Quickie will be ready 'round the middle of next week. I am doing yours dead last because of the sensitivity of the material, but I will include a pair of Mullard DL-92's since I am keeping you waiting)
For entertainment value, I can put some speaker posts on the back of your Quickie...
