My Kit 1 wiring is a little messed up and I want to change it. I want to replace it with a solid core wire that will fit into the holes in the pcb but don't know what size wire would work. Is it 20, 22, or ? gauge?

No problem with 20 or 22 guage - I think you could even get away with 18 guage - good idea to twist the wire !
