I currently own a pair of Audio Note AZ-Two speakers partnered to my Audio Note Soro SE amp and while I like the sound for the most part, find myself in need of new speakers due to WAF. I am in the midst of completing a home reno and my ugly vinyl floorstanders are no longer welcome.
I know that the AN/K or AN/J would be a natural choice but they fail the WAF test as well so now I am on the hunt for speakers that sound terrific with Audio Note gear (specifically the Soro SE)and look great as well.
I recently pick up a pair of JMR Twin Signatures to try in my system and so far, I am unsure if they will remain. As such, I am looking for other alternatives so all suggestions are welcome.
Budget wise, I would like to keep the cost to under $1500 used or $2000 new.
Thanks.
Follow Ups:
I had a Soro with Trentes and it was terrific. Beautiful tone, clarity and very vibrant too but, if you do not like the Twins then it may not be to your liking
thanks
Phil
fwiw the Trentes have the clarity of my kit 3 and even a little better in parts of the range where the kit 3 is slightly muddy (to my ears - probably part of being in the corner)
I replaced the Soro with a Meishu w/Blackgate upgrade. A nice upgrade, I really love the 300B sound and at 9 watts it is quite robust too.
thanks
Phil
Thanks Phil & congrats on the Meishu! Looks like I was too late to jump on the Trentes so will need to keep my eyes open.
Phil - overall I find the Twins to be a pleasant speaker, but they just don't offer up the clarity that my AZ-Twos do. I wonder if the Trents do offer the same type of clarity?
I noticed that you just sold your Soro. What are you replacing it with if you don't mind me asking?
You need Duets to get the clarity you're after in a Reynaud. Trentes are warmer through the mids, very punchy. Duets more transparent.
You can veneer your current speakers fairly easily if you wish. No special skills are needed. You can purchase iron on veneer which only requires a regular iron to apply and a sharp blade to trim. You would just have to sand the current surface to get rid of any sheen so the adhesive can get a "bite". A link to a vendor that sells the veneer is attached. Just type in veneer into the search.
If your current speakers have chips on the vinyl you can fill those gaps with bondo, or any other adhesive (preferably 5 minute epoxy) mixed with filler such as wood dust.
Wipe on polyurethane is a good DIY finish that gives excellent results after 3 coats. Dry the rags flat though to avoid a fire.
Regards,
Tony
I've seriously entertained the thought of peeling the vinyl off and veneering my pair of AZ Twos. A couple feet of hanger wire, 8 tabs of velcro and some very thin black cloth for grill clothes would complete the makeover.
Keep your ears and your mind open.
I would suggest Tannoy but they're uglier and more expensive but they sound good. The slim line lookers tend to sound poor or don't mach up well with SETs.
Any other suggestions? How would a pair of AX-2 signatures partnered with a REL sub compete against something like my AZ-Twos? The AX-2 Signature is attractive in the real wood veneer and small enough so that WAF isn't really an issue.
Any thoughts?
"....How would a pair of AX-2 signatures partnered with a REL sub compete against something like my AZ-Twos?....."
Ihave had both these speakers and while the AX-2 is a great little speaker, I would recommend staying with the AZ-Two as you already know you enjoy their sound. As Cope and others have mentioned, it would not be hard to strip the vinyl off your speakers and apply real wood veneer. I think even if you had to pay someone to do it, you would still come out ahead and you would be able to keep the speakers you already love and make the wife happy at the same time.
Even with new veneer, I think she would still find the AZ-Two speakers ugly as they are rather bulky / chunky. As for sound quality, I like the AZ-Twos but sometimes feel that something is missing, even the the clairty and speed of the speaker are wonderful.
Any other thoughts or suggestions?
My dealer likes the AX two regular version over the sig version(which I believe is discontinued).
Darn wives - always buy your system before you get the wife. :-)
Tell your dealer to clean his ears...unless he's listening on ss, in which case yes, the regulars would sound better (more forgiving) than the Sigs.
