Does anyone have experience with this Audio Technica headshell?I'd really like to try it out with my AT1005II/DL-103 combo because i've been told that the weight and rigidity of it would be great for this, but i'm a bit hesitant to order one because i can't figure out how to adjust overhang properly on this headshell.
I can imagine that there's two, or maybe more rows of mounting holes for the cart underneath the shell, but how do you make the fine adjustment? Is it possible to loosen the azimuth adjustment screw and then slide the shell part back and forth along the arm connecting tube?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.
Jan

especially the ones regarding fine adjustment of overhang on this particularly headshell. It was just the kind of answers i was hoping for.
I must admit that i am a bit concerned by raising the effective tonearm mass by almost 10g. if using this headshell, but i'm currently using a 2mm. thick homemade headshell weight plate made of pure lead, and this added weight works well with my AT1005II/DL-103.
Perhaps it would be a smart move to test the arm/cart resonance, with the lead plate, using the Hi-Fi News Test Record, (krenzler ;-) before ordering that massive 18g. headshell.
Well, if you use the Hi-Fi News test record, be advised that the announced frequencies are not accurate.
Is that the newest version of the HFN test record John?
Thanks.I wouldn't be very surprised if the inaccuracies has remained on the newest version but who knows?
Thanks John. I will have that in mind.
Hi there,Fine adjustment of overhang can be achieved by loosening the bolt in the collar and sliding the main section of the headshell backwards or forwards.
Incidentally, the AT headshells are a good match for use with the SME series II tonearms, because you can tighten the locking nut on the tonearm so that the headshell is securely fastened to the tonearm, and then make accurate adjustments to azimuth using the adjustable collar on the headshell.
Best regards
As far as the overhang is concerned, if ever you will be off it will just be very very small. Consult John Elison for that as he is the expert. He worked it all out for me.
I think the 18 g AT headshell is about right with a Denon 103. Resulting resonance frequency would about 11.62 Hz. Remember the compliance of the Denon 103 is only 5. I use a Fidelity Reasearch FR 64S arm with the FR-S/3 headshell with a total mass of 30 g with a 103R and it is just right. The FR-S/3 headshell weighs 19.5 grams.
5cu is at 100Hz. Compliance at 10Hz is higher.
Audio Technica used to make a magnesium headshell that was only 8-grams called the MS-8.
It had a hex-head bolt that could be loosened for adjusting overhang and azimuth.
It also had two sets of threaded cartridge mounting holes for gross adjustment of overhang.
AudioCubes2 also sell two headshells similar to AT-LH18OCC only less heavy (13g. & 15g.).
