I wanted to try a Pioneer PL-12D, but it is really important to me to have auto-lift. Therefore I was looking at the PL-15D. I was wondering what the difference is between the PL-15D, the PL-15D II and the PL-150D II, which I can buy locally from a seller?
Follow Ups:
The PL-15 and PL-15D II, its successor are identical except the latter has slightly better specs. To my knowledge there is no PL-150D II. Usually someone has misread the lettering. With the square font Pioneer used, it was common to misread a D as a zero. It was probably also a PL-15D II. Or maybe it's a PL-115D, which was the successor. If that is the case, then it's a better tonearm (IMO) and still better specs. All of these models were auto-return. And I agree with you--I prefer that feature, as well.
Thanks for the information. You're exactly right! I just looked at these units I just bought and the old guy who sold them to me had mistaken PL-15D for PL-150. I am now the proud owner of two vintage Pioneer decks: a PL-15D II and a PL-12D. The PL-15D II has already been slightly modified, but to my liking. Namely, it has a pilot light added to the front of the plinth that glows when the table is running. It also has the stock phono cables removed and has female RCA jacks on the back so I can use my own interconnects, which is great! Tonight I took off the small rubber feet and installed Arcici spiked pods. Tomorrow I'll set up my Grado Prestige Silver and give it a listen. Also, do you happen to know where I can find spares for these units? I'd like to have a spare motor pulley/spindle and I need a dust cover as well.
With the exception of new belts, the only thing you can do for extra parts is to keep your eyes open for other used models either via thrift shops, ebay, or classifieds. Pioneer no longer stocks any parts for these. You might want to mosey on over to audiokarma.org. You'll fine more vintage turntable users over there.
