Just finished listening to the hauntingly beautiful just released Elliott Smith 2LP. Such a luvey album it almost brings a tear to one's eye considering Elliott is no longer with usNot a new album as such, but mainly unreleased songs from his self titled 2nd and third Either/Or albums.
Follow Ups:
On his iPod of course (through computer speaks). He wuz telling me, that I gotta listen to it (with certitude). Listening for a minute or two, told him the only place music like that comes from, is beyond the gates of hell's addictions. Sho nuff, he googles.Yeah, I own some dark music, even despairing. But I ain' gunn listen to dat dere (been there/seen-done that/thank you very much). Of course this in wo way discounts your purchase or enjoyment!
ElmoWith that attitude you would no listen to most rock music, let alone Jimi hendrix, Doors, Nirvana, janis Joplin, Del Shanon, Elton John, Eric Clapton, all of whom have either killed themselves or tried to.
I believe any adult can easily seperate listening to music and the reasons why someone kills themselves.
As I said a beautiful album from a very talented artist, sho unfortunately died too soon
"Yeah, I own some dark music, even despairing. But I ain' gunn listen to dat dere (been there/seen-done that/thank you very much). Of course this in wo way discounts your purchase or enjoyment!"Been somewhere around ten years since I was 'in the mix'. As a full fledged member of the booyah tribe (not a rock band), order of the bellringers. Capisce?
I can listen to every artist who took a pull on whatever substance. Even Lady Day, and separate the muse/music from the spike. But that Smith stuff just too raw. And am unable to separate the evil that owned him, from the sound. I don't need to re-occupy any of that space.
I know about this particular situation pretty first hand, and you really shouldn't make assumptions about where that music comes from, like it or not. Most of that music was written without interference from addiction. And not everybody who writes sad songs kills themselves.
very sad. such a talented artist. heroin just ravaged his mind and body. he comitted suicide at 34 years old, but looked like he was 54!and there had to be a better way to go than stabbing yourself in the heart!
The coroner never made a determination whether it was him or someone else. There were two "penetrating stab wounds" to the chest. There were circumstances that could point either way - homicide or suicide. He had been in treatment for his addictions, and many around him thought he had been doing better. Either way, it was a sad way to go for a gifted artist.
