Hi, I bought an ADC K8 XLM Mk2 moving magnet cartridge, and am stunned at the sound and the high (6.0mv!) output. Does anyone have any experience with this cartridge? Just curious about other opinions, thanks!
Follow Ups:
It is actually a moving iron, not a moving magnet. In any event, ADC made some good stuff.
This was the darling of the early issues of TAS back in the seventies. hp praised its ability to capture the "air" of a live performance. Peter Prichard, the designer, later went on to produce the Sonus line of cartridges, which had similar sound but woeful quality control.
I have an ADC XLM mk2 on a Luxman PD-284. I don't know the "K8", is that a Linn cart? Anyway the ADC sounds fine, lush, warm, deep and wide stereo image. Alas NOS stylii are getting very expensive.
"The torture never stops"
Just curious....
In my opinion, and using typical Grados and ADCs as examples, I would say that Grados are a bit warmer, and ADCs are a bit more detailed and track better. It isn't hard and fast, however. Some models are very close in their sound and tracking ability. Then again, some of the Grados (like the Signature XTC) are more dynamic than ADCs, but some ADCs are far more detailed (like the TRX-2). Overall, I would tip the scales in favor of ADC for my personal favorite, but others prefer the extra warmth of a Grado.
What does it sound like?
Hi, it sounds surprisingly fast and dynamic, almost like a good moving coil, but with the natural tone color of a moving magnet. I'm impressed for $20!
